Early last Thursday morning Steamworks received a delivery from GB Rail. Six lengths of 50lb/yd rail with associated fixings. The lengths are each 40 feet long so my simple calculations suggest they will be very heavy and give the volunteers a good workout.
These rails will enable us to complete the siding behind the portakabin and, once the inspection / ash pit is built, mean that all outside 3 ft gauge track and the door end of each engine shed road will be of the heavier duty 50lb rail, this is the track that the locomotives travel over most of the time.
Once the new sleepers arrive, volunteers will be able to take advantage of the cooler yet still dryish days of autumn to lay the new rail and carry out maintenance, mostly fishplate lubrication, over the rest of the track.
